We are looking for an enthusiastic Junior Designer to join a children’s book publisher and packager, based in Sherborne, Dorset. This an excellent opportunity for a creative individual who is looking for the next step in their design career, or looking to start their career in children’s book publishing. We pride ourselves on our ability to create imaginative, innovative children’s books with designs that make them jump off the shelf.
A passion for design, typography and a good eye for illustration are a must – and we’d hope to see this with a strong portfolio. The selected applicant will join a small, highly motivated team and will work alongside the Creative Director to produce layouts and print ready files for our much-loved children’s books. Further to this and upon succession in the role, you will get the opportunity to come up with new exciting projects; picture books, flap books and other novelty books for children aged 0-5 years.
Key duties:
To assist with the design and layout of children’s books.
An ability to follow briefs and style guides for current projects.
Attention to detail, creating and checking print-ready files.
Commission illustrators and editors for new projects with the ability to, confidently, sketch and brief.
To come up with ideas and concepts for new book formats/layouts.
Liase with third-party contributors, ensuring that all projects adhere to the house-style.
Ensuring that all files are created in line with the required technical accuracy and design quality levels.
Work to set deadlines, making sure that final files are supplied on time and to a high standard.
Creating banners, imagery and photographs to update the company’s website with the latest work.
Creating imagery and photographs to keep social media platforms updated with the company’s latest work.
Skills / Experience:
You must have an excellent understanding and working knowledge of Adobe CC, specifically: InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
Creativity!
A good understanding of the design process.
Exceptional organisational and communication skills will be key due to the hybrid nature of the role.
A can-do attitude with an ability to overcome challenges – working as a team player and individually.
A fantastic attention to detail.
Interest in children’s books and a good eye for illustration.
Carry out other duties as may be required that fall within the capabilities of the job.
Prior design experience in book publishing is advantageous but not required.
Workplace:
The role is a hybrid role. With a minimum of 1 day in the office per week (once probation passed.)
The office is in Sherborne, Dorset.
Package:
£20,000 - £24,000 p/a depending on experience
26 days holiday a year + bank holidays.
Pension
Permanent – full time (40 hours per week)
